Read Only Memory (ROM)
ROM is short for Read Only Memory. ROM is a flash memory chip that contains a small amount of non-volatile memory. Non-volatile means that its contents cannot be changed and it retains its memory after the computer is turned off. ROM contains the basic instructions for what needs to happen when a computer is powered on. ROM plays a critical part in booting up, or starting up a PC or device. On most modern computers, the read-only memory is located on a BIOS chip. The BIOS chip is normally attached to the motherboard.
